Q. 3. What does the bible primarily teach?
A. The Bible primarily teaches what man is to believe about God and what God requires of man.
Since the Bible is our only authority or rule, what does it primarily teach us? The Bible primarily teaches us two things: What man is to believe about God, and what God requires of man. Just as man’s primary purpose is the glorify God and enjoy him forever, the Bible’s primary purpose is to tell him how to do this. This question gives us the outline of this catechism. In the next 35 questions we will find out what we are to believe about God. When we see who God is, his great works, and his plan of redemption, our hearts will delight in that which God requires of us which is the second part of the catechism which makes up the remaining questions.
MEMORY VERSE: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” (Eccles. 12:13).
